Lent Group 2010: Patch Adams

Last year we enjoyed the story of Patch Adams.

The film is based on a factual story of an unconventional physician who attempted to heal patients with laughter. Hunter Cambell "Patch Adams" (Robin Williams), a lost man who commits himself to an institution in 1969. From there his experiences convince him to become a doctor, and he enrolls in medical school, where he is overcome by the attitude of the Doctors especially at the cold, clinical professionalism that alienates patients from their carers. Determined to provide emotional and spiritual relief as well as medicine, Patch clowns around for his patients, getting to know them personally. Although his efforts seem to work wonders and the hospital nursing staff are grateful for the love and relief Adams provides the patients, although his methods alienate his piers and faculty of his school. However Adams decides to persevere, and this leads to him starting his own clinic called the Gesundheit Institute, working alongside some like minded professionals and better still with the love of his life and fellow student, Carin. Until one day Patch's career is put in jeopardy with some tragic news, and the faculity leaders force him to defend his style, methodology and philosophy before a board determined to bar him from practicing medicine.

The short film depics the trilas and tribulations of Hunter Adams.
